Early Language Learning

A few days ago, I was invited to an event at Reading Is Fun at Rumah Kerinci. The event is Early Language Workshop. As you can see, it’s mainly talking about Early education for your child. As parents, I am sure that you want to give all the best for your child. Either it’s food, clothes, house, facility, education and so on. Therefore I am very much interested with the topic.

Is it possible for babies and children to read at the early years? Well.. It is definitely possible.

A baby’s brain thrives on stimulation and develops at phenomenal pace. Nearly 90% of brain development occurs by the age of five. The best and easiest time to learn a language is during the infant and toddler years, when the brain is creating thousands of synapses every second allowing a child to learn both the written word and spoken word simultaneously and with much more ease.

But of course, in order for the baby to learn and to develop a good reading habits, we need to establish an environment that can encourage them to learn. The environment must be able to give the baby opportunities to learn this abilities:

  • Language and literacy abilities
  • Multisensory abilities
  • Communication abilities
  • Cognitive and creative abilities

To be able to learn, a child will need a receptive language.

  • Use parentheses. (A loud and rhythmic sound)
  • Talk to the babies as much as possible
  • Describe all of the baby’s senses
  • Use simple but descriptive languages

When your child is learning, they will learn the first 50 words for quite some time. But after that, it will gradually becomes easier for them to learn. Well, it’s the same as building a habit. It took several time to be accustomed to it and when it does, it just happens. Once the child has learned how to learn new words, you can use hundreds of new words every week. Wow.. That’s a lot. 🙂

One thing that you have to remember, when you are teaching your child to read, you have to create a multisensory and fun environment. Why? Because it is easier for them to learn if they can see, hear, feel, experience, do and act what they are learning. And also, if you are trying to teach your child to read, you have to show them the words first. Show them how to read it and also point out how to read it (point your finger under the word when you read it to them).  Don’t show them the pictures first because they are easily distracted with the pictures.

Your Baby Can Read, Your Child Can Discover

Your Baby Can Read and Your Baby Can Discover is an early childhood literacy mechanism based on the multisensory methodology developed by Dr. Titzer, an infant researcher from USA. He first find out this method when he was trying to give his child a better things to see through his homemade video. After a while, he notices that his daughter can identify words that are shown on the video that he made. And later on, his daughter gradually develop a good reading habits. From this experience, then he started to do a research about it and finally developed the methodology.

This method offers great benefits for babies, toddlers and preschoolers:

  • Provides great brain stimulation
  • Offers a new language learning experience
  • Enables early reading skill
  • Builds greater confidence
  • Enhances learning ability
  • Increase communication skill
  • Nurtures early learning and reading habits early in life

Reading Is Fun

Every parent wants the best for their children and there is no right or wrong way of parenting. But all will agree that building good reading habits early in life goes a long way in enlightening the ways they think. Nurbaiti Hafmaya (Betty), Lili and Humaira, the founder of Reading Is Fun, wants to share their experience about this to other parents so that other children can also benefit from this habits. They finally founded Reading Is Fun because they saw that children nowadays really need a good place where they can built this habits. That, combined with the Reading Aloud and Story Telling ambience enforced by the Reading is Fun team provides any child with the most congenial environment for learning, discovery and exploration embraced with love, care and value emphasis. Therefore, hopefully, the child can build the good reading habits and they don’t feel the pressure in doing it because it is a fun thing to do for them.

Reading is fun is undoubtedly the only comprehensive program in Indonesia that incorporates a nearly childhood literacy mechanism based on the multi sensory methodology developed by Dr. Titzer.
